Description
In the decade of the 1940s, life at sea in the Navy was very different from what it is today. Dr. George Hemingway Isom, historian, has written about his experiences in the segregated Navy of that time. This was a Navy in which black sailors and white sailors slept and showered in separate compartments and had different assignments based upon race. Blacks cleaned the officers’ quarters, made their beds, and cooked and served their food. White sailors, on the other hand, had seaman duties which kept the ship functioning and ready for engagement with the enemy. Many people have little idea about the role race played in the Navy of that decade and earlier. Now, through the eyes of a 14 year old black boy, who joined the Navy in 1945 and became a veteran at age 16, here is an opportunity to discover what it was like to be black - and underage - in the Jim Crow Navy.
